The
Cub Scout Derby Car Owner has to be present to enter his car in the
race. The Cub Scout will bring his car to registration for
inspection (Race Day from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) for any final
adjustments that are necessary. A Participant CANNOT race a car
built in a previous year. Only one car per scout.
-
The
Pinewood Derby car is to be constructed from the materials in the
kit (Cub Scout Derby Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit). The
original nails in the kit must be used for the axles. Nothing
may be added to the racer except: weights, paint, and other purely
decorative items. The plastic wheels may not be modified except for
the removal of small burrs (as described in the kit instructions)
and the addition of (again) purely decorative items.
-
Cars MUST be completely sanded and painted by the Cub Scout.
Parents CAN help cut out the design and put on the wheels. Parent or
Cub Scout CAN do accessories and weights.
-
The Two Pre-cut slots provided on the block of wood in the kit are
the required location for placing the nail axles into the car.
This is not optional.
-
The
total overall width must not exceed 2-3/4 inches; the total overall
length must not exceed 7 inches; and the height must not exceed 3
inches. The wheel track must be between 1-3/4 inches and 1-7/8
inches. The clearance between the bottom of the car (including
added-weights) and the flat surface on which the car is placed must
be at least 3/8 inches. The car must not hang up on the track during
the race.
-
Open
‘V’ configuration on the front end of the car will not be permitted.
-
The
use of spring or shocks, wheel bearings, bushings, washers, or
starting devices is strictly prohibited. The Derby car MUST be
freewheeling.
-
The
total weight of the racer must not exceed 5.0 ounces, which shall be
determined by the official scale. The scale will be calibrated
using the official Cub Scout Derby 5.0-ounce weight (which weighs
the same as 25 U.S. quarter-dollars).
-
The
added weight MUST be of a solid form, no liquid or movable weight
and must be firmly attached to the racer. For Example, loose BB
shots in the bottom-drilled compartment of the racecar are not of a
solid form, and thus are not allowed.
-
Only
dry lubricants such as graphite may be used. No liquids may be
present when the racer is checked in. Derby cars may not be
lubricated AFTER being submitted to check-in
and
will race all races without further lubrication.
-
Each
Derby Car MUST pass an inspection by the derby committee before the
Derby Car may be entered into the District Pinewood Derby. The Derby
Car must meet ALL of the above Criteria in order to be entered into
the District Pinewood Derby.
-
The
Official Pinewood Derby Committee has the right to disqualify any
Derby Car that does not meet any of the above criteria. Derby
Racers that pass the inspection of the Official Committee become at
that moment, the responsibility of the Official Committee until such
a time that the car is eliminated, or the entire Event is over. As
soon as the Derby Car passes inspection, it will be placed in the
"Pit Area."
-
No one
except for Official Committee Members will be allowed in the Pit
Area until the entire Event is completed. During the race, NO ONE
except Official Committee Members and the Owner of the Derby Car may
handle their Derby Car. If the Derby Car becomes in need of repair,
the Cub Scout and his Parent(s) or Guardian will be allowed to
repair the car in the officially designated area. A member of the
Official Committee must observe such repairs.
Any necessary repairs must be made in a
timely manner. Repairs do not include the addition of lubrication
(see rule #9 above).
-
If a car jumps off the lane strip, that race will be run again
(after all injuries are tended to). If a car jumps the track 3 times
in a row it will be disqualified from that race.
-
Poor
sportsmanship conduct by either the Cub Scout or by his Parent(s) or
Guardian will result in the disqualification of the Cub Scout. Cubs
and Parent(s) or Guardian are expected to be dignified whether
winning or losing.
